Farny's Driving School - Driving Test Information

The Theory Test
The theory test is made up of two parts - a multiple choice test and the hazard perception test.

The Multiple Choice Test
This is taken using a touch screen computer. A practice session before the test begins will show you how to use the computer and how to answer the questions.

The actual test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. Only one question will appear on the screen at a time. You will be able to move backwards and forwards through the questions and flag questions that you want to look at again.

You will be allowed a maximum of 57 minutes to answer all 50 questions and you must answer 43 or more questions correctly in order to pass.

The Hazard Perception Element
After the multi-choice test has finished you will be allowed a break of up to three minutes after which the hazard perception test will commence.

Firstly a instruction video will play. This will give you details on how to take the test.

During the test you will see 14 film clips of traffic scenes from a driver's point of view. In each clip a hazard - something that makes the driver stop, slow down or change direction - will develop. Thirteen of the clips will contain one hazard and the other two.

As soon as you see the hazard develop you need to press either the left or right mouse button. The sooner you recognise the hazard the more points you score.

When you press one of the mouse buttons you will see a red flag appear at the bottom of the screen. This red flag shows that your response has been recorded.

The marking for each score able hazard is split into 5 parts. If you respond in the first part you will get 5 points, in the second part 4 points, and so on down to 1 point. If you fail to respond within the marked area of the clip, or are responding in an unacceptable manner, 0 points will be given for that clip.

If you press the mouse button indiscriminately you will score zero.

The pass rate is 44 out of a possible 75 points.

The multi-choice and hazard tests cost £30.50. You have to pass both parts in order to pass the theory test. If you fail just one test you will have to re-take both tests.

Practical Driving Test
In order to pass the practical driving test you must demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the Highway code and have the ability to drive safely on various types of roads and traffic conditions.

You will need to successfully perform two reversing manoeuvres - either a parallel par, a bay park or a turn in the road. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

On the day of the test you must present the following documentation:

Both parts of your provisional licence (photo card and paper counter document) If you have the old type paper licence you will also have to bring a valid passport. No other form of photo identification will be accepted.

Booking form or reference number.

Theory test pass certificate (for the practical test).

The test costs £56.50 on a week day or £67.00 over the weekend.
